Mini-review:

This is one of those rare dramas where I could tell I was in for something truly special from the very first episode. And it delivered on that initial promise until the very end. Somehow, it got better with every episode. You can just tell everyone involved was incredibly passionate about this project. The writing is both riotously funny and heartbreakingly sad; there are few dramas that have made me laugh and cry as much as this one. The directing and the cinematography also keep things dynamic and visually gorgeous. And the acting... Man, Kim Hye Yoon and Byeon Woo Seok give two of the best performances I've seen in a K-drama; their acting is so nuanced and detailed. Plus their chemistry is crazy, seriously off the charts. Lovely Runner has helped me get through these last couple of months, and I will miss it so so much. Do yourself a favor and go watch it, if you haven't already!

MY SWEET MOBSTER

GENRES: Comedy, Romance

SUMMARY: A shy, reformed gangster-turned-CEO and a confident content creator reunite and become the cutest couple ever.

THIS SHOW HAS EVERYTHING: Cupcakes, sausages, animal dances, orphanages, Daddy issues, fluffy cats, professional rivals, romantic players, soccer players, impeccable suits, and earnest redemption.

HOT TAKE: From the interviews I've been reading with Uhm Tae Goo, it seems like he is juts as shy in real life as his role in this drama and I love that for him. A perfect fit!

This show is super corny and super trope-y, but also super progressive and really emphasizes earnest communication when it comes to love and friendship. At face-value it's not the kind of show that I really go for, but its totally worth throwing expectations aside for.

My only gripe is that the last episode was kinda meh, but not meh enough to ruin my time with the rest of it.

Synopsis:

In order to survive and protect his family, he tries to reveal the true colors of the privileged people involved in a huge conspiracy.

Hard 5/5. Absolutely everyone delivered an incredible performance with their roles, really bringing you into the story from their perspectives. You find yourself floundering through events, just as Park Chang Ho does, trying to make sense of what's happening to him and who is the real antagonist of the plot. I think one of the strengths of the writing for this story was that there are no red herrings. Everything is a clue, and every time you think there's more to someone or something, there is. The plot reveals itself in a timely and interesting fashion so you're never left disappointed or frustrated at dead ends or outrageous conclusions.

Yang Kyung Won as Gong Ji Hoon was a stand out performance in this one with his volatile and eccentric character. He is incredibly dynamic and interesting to watch. I have seen him take on so many different roles where he usually plays into the comic relief or the blustery, blow-hard so it was absolutely delightful to see him play a capable and morally bankrupt character that you love to hate.

Kim Joo Hun did an equally remarkable job as Choi Do Ha. The gradual revelation of his character was done so gracefully and poetically and that is all thanks to his amazing talent as a performer.

My single criticism would be that the female roles were all decidedly one dimensional when compared to the rich personalities of the men around them. Im Yoon Ah, who played Ko Mi Ho, Park Chang Ho's wife, seemed dull and one note against the more colorful and energetic performances around her. Whoever wrote the script clearly struggled with the female characters, and Im Yoon Ah isn't a strong enough actress to have made up for the lack of written development.

As far as suspense, intrigue, mystery, and action is concerned Big Mouth has all of it, and it's perfectly balanced to keep you interested and invested. If you enjoy any of those genres, then you will definitely enjoy this one.
